The United Nations Interagency Framework Team for Preventive Action (FT) manages a joint global UN-EU project financed by the European Union's Instrument for Stability to strengthen capacities of stakeholders for the sustainable management of land and natural resources. The project brings together UN agencies and departments (DESA, DPA, PBSO, HABITAT, UNDP, and UNEP) to support countries to improve natural resource management for conflict prevention and peace building. The key deliverables of this partnership are practical guidance notes and training material on land and conflict, extractives and conflict, renewable resources and conflict and capacity building on the same topics. Using the four Guidance Notes, on-line interactive modules have been developed to impart this knowledge and skills particularly to field staff in both the UN and EU, as well as relevant HQ personnel.
The land, natural resources and conflict prevention online course was developed under the leadership of the UN Framework Team for Preventive Action and UNDP/BoM/ Office of Human Resources the with funding support of the European Union and UNDP. Each EU-UN member agency has contributed to the development: content was provided by UNEP, UNHABITAT, UNSSC and UNDP and on-line development was managed by the Design Lab of OHR/UNDP.

The on-line course begins with a global overview to enhance understanding of the link between natural resources and conflict, and their overall effect on development and the UN-EU interventions in managing them.
The following 3 modules relate to specific natural resources concerns: land, extractive industries and renewable resources. Throughout the course, the learner will follow three Peace and Development Practitioners during their missions to three countries facing critical situations exacerbated by Natural Resources. The learner will understand how natural resources can create or aggravate conflict and will learn to assess the situation and look for opportunities for interventions that can prevent or reduce conflict.
